On-campus Jobs

Once you are enrolled as an ITP student, you will have access to job postings all over campus through CU Connect. ITP offers several student assistant positions that pay $13-16 per hour, however, they are usually awarded to students who have completed at least one semester in the program.
Also, the web page http://www.colorado.edu/studentemployment/ is a useful resource for students that were not awarded with a student assistantship, but still want to find a job in the university. This link provides a big variety of all kinds of on-campus jobs.

Thanks for your comment! On-campus jobs vary and you will have access to all postings once you have enrolled. Types of jobs range from IT services, studio/recording support, shipping support to other things such as dining halls and bookstore positions. As with everywhere--there is competition for the positions but ITP students have desired skill sets all over campus. You may find a job as a student assistant in ITP during your first semester, but only if you have significant experience in the subject matter and the prof is willing to hire a new student.

ITP students, anything to add?

Hey thanks for creating this blog. I had a wonderful time reading it. Well I have a question in mind rgding oncampus jobs...say a normal job pays around 7$ per hr...u work 4 hours a day tht is 28$s a day * 5= 140$s a week which is 560$s a month...(Correct me, if my calculations went haywire :P). So with this money in hand, I was told that you can cover living expenses...but is it possible to save anything?

Jay, you seem to be doing interesting things in networking already – that is great ! Well, we cannot comment on what the requirements of a faculty member would be, but yes any relevant experience does help in academics as well as at work.

Priya, unfortunately we do not have information on assistantships available with faculty members. If a faculty member decides to publish any job / assistantship positions within ITP, that information would be circulated to all people within ITP.

Vishal: There are two answers to your question. 1. Our lab director hires several people to do support for the Telecom Lab. This would include PC and router maintenance as well as setting up labs for specific purposes. 2. There are jobs available within ITS. I am not very familiar with them because I have not ever had a job with them. I know for sure that they hire people to answer tech support calls as well as PC repair type jobs. Unfortunately, their job postings requires a CU login and password, but you might look at ITS's website and get a better idea about what they do (http://www.colorado.edu/its/). There are approximately 35,000 people associated with the University of Colorado, so I would assume that there is no shortage of IT related work to be done.

Minotee,
Most students get an on campus job that pays at least $8 per hr. They work for 20 hrs a week which enables them earn approximately $ 600 a month. However, one should not expect to save much from the earnings of an on campus job.

Hi,

Can I know the different kinds of jobs available to ITP graduates after completing their MS?

deepan: In an effort to maintain the separate categories, your question will be answered in the section "Internships and Career Opportunities."

hi,
Its mentioned in the web site that itp does not offer any TA/RA postions.but they do offer student assistant position which is similiar to TA.
1)is any fee waiver offered to the student who is hired as student assistant.
2)I hav heard very few students are offered these positions hardly 2 or 3 in the whole batch.could you please provide info as to how many students were provided SA in fall 2006 batch by itp?

Thanks in advance
Jay

Jay:
1) As mentioned in your initial post, the SA jobs are paid at an hourly wage, and hence not a waiver of any kind. The way in which they are similar to a TA is in terms of what you do (ie. you grade, help design homeworks, conduct labs, etc).

2) I am not sure the number on how many students are hired for these positions, but most courses have one SA (some have more some have less). Then there are some other positions are also SA positions, such as working in the lab (i think 3-4 people, again this is an impression) and positions like mine, which fit an "other" category. I am currently the SA for the Associate Director, so I do largely administrative work, some research, etc. Depending on budget, sometimes there are more than one of my positions.

As a result, I would guess that there are between 15 and 20 SA's hired each semester. Thus, they are pretty competitive, but not impossible to get.

so it means itp does not offer tuition wavers???cause i heard there r 2 options either work 4 20 hrs n get full waiver or work 4 10hrs n get fees for 5 credits waived

Snehal said...

Jay:

The tution waiver can only be in the form of fellowships/scholarships.
As mentioned in FAQ section on
telecom.colorado.edu (FAQ#4)
the students are considered for such tution waiver at the beginning of a semester.

Sorry to say, but the two options you have mentioned don't exist. If you work for 20 hrs, the compensation is only for those 20 hrs. Please check the FAQ mentioned above or "Tution and Financial Aid" section on this blog.

I think we are confusing the concepts of Student Assistants (SA), RA/TAs and fellowships.
SA: ITP offers 10-15 SA positions that are compensated hourly only. There is no tuition coverage with these positions.
RA/TA: ITP does not officially offer these positions. A few professors within ITP offer these positions to a couple of students per year. There is tuition coverage with these appointments.
Fellowships: These are strictly financial awards ITP gives to new students based on application merit. These are one time awards applied to tuition bills.

Hey...As we all know there are lot of people who have got admits this year compared to earlier years. The biggest concern of everyones mind is whether UC,boulder n surrounding areas have job opportunities for the extra people coming this Fall.I know this will be a difficult question to answer in advance, but if you can give us general trend about the jobs it will be of great help.Since Boulder is a bit expensive univ getting a job immediatedly will be on everyones mind.Thnx....

Narayanan said...

Hi Rahul,

Well, if it is regarding on campus jobs, then students can only work in the university and not in surrounding/near by areas. Regarding the availability of jobs, even good number of students came this spring compared to last spring. Almost every one managed to get at least one on campus job. I think, irrespective on the number of students coming, CU has enough capability and requirement to absorb all the students for on campus jobs.

What should one do to get a RA/TA after getting an admit from CU. Is there any fees waiver available for deserving candidates ?

Deepak,

ITP offers limited competitive Student Assistant (SA) employment. Every semester, we announce to our students available SA positions. One prerequisite to obtaining an SA position is completion of the class for which the position is posted.

There are some unpaid Research Assistant (RA) positions offered via independent study. ITP does not offer tuition remission.
