ITP is one of the most recognized Interdisciplinary Telecommunications Program among the Telecom industry in the US and worldwide. One of the main reasons for this international recognition is that ITP students come from many different countries around the world (for example India, China, US, Tanzania, Kazakhstan, Mexico) and had provided excellent working results while performing their jobs after they finish their degree.
If you like to study, make new friends, have contact with the industry before finishing your degree ITP could be the program for you!!!
This section is intended for prospective students to converse with current students about enrolling in ITP @ CU, so please feel free to post any comments.
Welcome to ITP's prospective student blog!
We understand you have a lot of questions as you decide which graduate program is right for you. ITP staff, faculty and current students will provide you the answers you need. Please post questions as comments under the topical headings. We have also created two sites on our webpage designed to answer many questions (FAQ and Fast Facts). If you have a question unrelated to the given topics, please post it to the "Other" category and we will file it under the correct heading. Please allow a few days for your questions to be answered.

Hello! I am really intrested in ITP's Policy and Law Courses. Please let me know how ITP can help me with research and funding opportunities in this field?
Thank You!
Akki-
I have taken several of the Policy and Law courses and can vouch for their quality. As for research/funding opportunities, I do not believe that there are any official mechanisms in place. Several of the Policy classes use a Student Assistant for grading, etc, so there is an opportunity there. As for research, likely your best option would be to do a thesis under one of the policy professors.
With the above said, the professors that teach policy courses in ITP are really committed to the field that they teach in. For example, Phil Weiser started the Silicon Flatirons Telecommunications Program (http://silicon-flatirons.org/). As a result, if there are career/internship opportunities available, they are very willing to help you find them.
hii i hav an admit in UC boulder.. my interest is in networkin.. i hav also got an admit frm UCSB.. i'd like to know which is a better choice in terms of course, fees, funding and on campus jobs..
Preeta-
ITP is considered as the oldest telecom program in the US. Today, ITP offers great courses in networking like the Telecom lab, IP routing, IP network design. In fact, the Telecom lab is very well equipped and hence students have the opportunity to get hands on experience on the routers and switches. With all these reasons, students find it easy to get a job in the networking industry after taking these courses.
hii.. i just gt an admit from ITp... could u please tell me how old is the program??? also what are the job prospects??? is it any diff from a regular MS in ECE majoring in telecomm???
Pragya-
ITP was started in 1971. It was the first program of its kind and has been a model for telecom programs around the country.
The question about job prospects has been answered in quite a bit of depth in the section of this blog on Internships and Career Opportunities. There is also a pretty good list of potential employers on the ITP Fast Facts page.
I would argue that there are 2 fundamental differences between an ITP degree and an ECE degree with telecom classes. 1. The I in ITP stands for interdisciplinary, meaning that you take business and policy classes as part of your ITP degree. The purpose of this is that telecommunications issues that are technical are always already business issues (and often have policy implications). ITP is designed to train decision makers who have a broader sense of a problem, and hence are better able to make an informed decision.
2. ITPs "technical" classes are not exactly the same as traditional engineering classes. I would argue that most technical classes in ITP are systems engineering, where attention is placed on solving a technical problem as opposed to circuit design. To be more clear, it is necessary to learn most of the engineering components to a communication system in order to make it function, but the focus is on the system. For example, our Wireless and Cellular Systems class teaches the engineering considerations necessary to model RF as well as antenna design, etc. However, it doesn't focus on designing the circuitry.
Ultimately every program has a slightly different philosophy about what is (and isn't) important. I would assume that there are vastly varying degrees on what I see as a distinction between an engineering class and a technical one. For me, the decision factor in favor of ITP was its interdisciplinary focus, so I have not read an enormous about MS ECE programs.
Hi Pragya,
Michael has answered your question with great details. I would like to add my thoughts. ITP is interdisciplinary. It trains the students to become decision makers and not the technology developers. The technical courses offered at ITP are more of applied nature than being theoretical. So the students are not expected to derive complex technical equations but to use that technology to provide a solution. That's the difference between ITP and ECE major.
Hello...i got conditional admit in ITP..that is i hav to take 3 weeks english course before term starts...so does ny one know how this course is???..i m too afraid becaz of this course....wat r the chances to clear in 1st attempt?..if i will not be able to clear in 1st attempt then i hav to wait to clear the course and then only my term starts?...or while studing i can do simultaneously....how difficult is this course?can anyone has already taken this course...give me that person contact...please let me know becaz my decision will depends on this....
Thank you!!!
Kunal: About the required pre-enrollment course. I'll give you a partial answer and then hopefully one of students who took the course last year can answer as well. This is a pass/fail course. You pass if you put in the effort and have 100% attendance to each session. The point of it is to give you a better foundation in writing, communication and presentation skills that are highly valued at ITP.
Kunal-
Laud's (a student that took this course last summer) reply to your question is below:
If the question is about the pre-enrollment program(3~4 weeks in summer vacation) for fall new international students( only for ITP and MBA student who is not native English speaker ),
my answer is, frankly, this course is not difficult even for me( my English is poor....).
The pre-enrollment program is just like an English language course plus knowing better about U.S. culture for international students.
Hope this can help you to answer the question.
I have an admit to the ITP program and to the ENTS program at UMD. The factors which make ENTS more attractive are the higher ranking of UMD and low fee structure. Could you tell me to what extend the rankings portray the quality of the program. Does it have an effect on job scenarios after graduation.
According to The Economist in 2005, the University of Colorado was ranked 11th best public institution in the world. Numbers are easy objective markers, but they never tell the whole story. In my personal opinion, US News and World Report and other rankings are very important for undergraduate programs, where, as a student, you have exposure to the entire university. However, in graduate school, you may never interact with professors and students outside of your discipline. It is my opinion that in terms of quality of graduate education, you need to look at comparing the quality of each individual graduate program, rather than the school as a whole.
In terms of prestige of the degree (ie, your diploma says Master of Science in Telecommunications from the University of Colorado), that is a question of brand/name recognition. It is my opinion that brand recognition is very similar for all of the top tier of public research based institutions.
Ultimately, I think your question boils down to the effect of college rankings on job potentials. The answer, in my opinion, is simply no. An MS in Telecom from CU will get you an interview at any of the big companies, Cisco, Juniper, ATT, Deloitte, Accenture, etc. It is then up to you (and what you learned in your masters program and other places) to prove that you are qualified for the job.
I think a better way to address the brand name question is to look at the brand name of the graduate program itself. While I do not know much about many of our competitive programs, ITP has a very strong brand recognition both in the US and abroad. Over our 35 year existence, we have amassed over 2000 graduates that live all over the world and often hire ITP students. ITP has a reputation of adapting to current trends to offer high quality courses in areas of high importance.
Unfortunately, there are no rankings of graduate telecom programs, so we are all left to make decisions based o the information that we have. Good luck with your decision making process.

I believe that several of the above posts answer your questions. Specifically, the two posts responding to Kunal's question on 5/9/2007. There are two posts, 1 from "itp" and the other comment was posted by me, but written by Laud, one of the ITP students who took it last year. If those posts don't answer your question, please post again.
To answer your first question directly (based on the older posts), I believe that attending and passing the class is necessary for you to start your study in ITP. That said, passing the class only requires attending and participating. It is not a class meant to weed people out, but rather is meant to make the transition to American classrooms easier on you.
Hey iam a B.E graduate in TE(batch 2007) from Bangalore,India and am currently working for Qwest,India .I am really interested about the Itp course.I would like to know what are the chances of me gettin admitted and the process of applying. Is it necessary for me to take up GRE and Gmat?Wat kind of scores do i need?Is work ex. required?.

Hello. I am an international student from the Caribbean. I got my B Sc in Electrical and Computer Eng almost 10yrs ago. Since then I have worked in the IT and Telecoms industry in both implementation, solution design and Project/Program Management. I am a PMP. Given my experience and background, I am looking at either doing the Dual degree program (with an MBA in Strategic Planning) or possibly the M Sc in ITP and a Phd in Management. Is consideration given to my work experience/training and will this be taken into account in determination of admission?
Hi Seniors,
What are the pros and cons for people coming to ITP boulder in spring ? Does it hamper their chance of getting interns in summer. Highlight on this issue.
Hello. I graduated high school 20 years ago and was trained by the U.S. Army in telecommunications and have been working in the field ever since then. I have been researching ITP, and am quite interested, and have sent a request in asking for assistance in enrolling. I did have several questions that hopefully others can answer.
I was wondering if there were any other telecom workers who entered this program after working in the field for several years, and what their experiences were with this program?
Also, given the time gap between high school, are there any academic concerns I should have, such as the higher maths that seem to be required (not my best subject in high school at all)?
Also, does ITP take military training and work experience under consideration for admittance requirements or credit requirements?
Thanks in advance.
Hi ,
I guess I got a provisional admission . How good are my prospects of changing the status to a regular student ?
My GPA is 8.02 on 10 .Is it less than 3.00 on 4.00 when you convert it ?
So was the admission given only based on my Financial Statement and not on my marks ?
Approximately how many students are enrolled into the MS telecommunications program each year ?
What is my chances to be admitted with some financial help? Please evaluate.
Completed Undergraduate in Computer Science
Undergrad overall CGPA 3.21
GRE Score: 750Q, 450V, 4.0AW
Doing professional work for the last 2.5 yrs in a well reputed software company in the country as a Assistant Software Engineer
Hello,
I'm an Australian student looking at doing a session at CU. My course requires me to complete a certain quota of technology subjects and ITP looks great! Is there any way that I could do a number of subjects in the one session or are they sequential so that you have to do subject a in one session and subject b in the next, followed by c, etc.?
Thankyou!!
Hello!I want to join ITP next year.My CGPA is 8.38 on the scale of 10.Then will i have to give GRE or TOFEL?
Hi Sanket,
the answer to your question regarding to the GPA vs GRE and TOEFL is the following. We will require the GRE beginning spring 2009 for ALL applicants. The minimum GPA for admission (regular) is 3.0. The office of International Admissions will assess an equivalent GPA score. TOEFL is only required for students who earned an undergraduate degree in a language other than English. Many submit TOEFL scores to enhance their admission chances, although it may not be required of them. We do not admit without the assessing the application in full. It up to you to send your transcripts to us, and we could ask International Admission if they would evaluate it in advance (it is up to them to decide whether they want or not to evaluate the transcripts).

Hi
I am very keen to apply for ITP at Colo- Bu, My GRE score is 1250, I have done B.TECH ( ECE) with GPA 8.5 out of 10.0 for a well Known college in INDIA and I am working in Intelligent Networks function of GSM from last 2 years.
I wish to apply for Fall 2010, But my query is if i can apply with TOEFL score of 90 as the minimum requirement stated on website is 100 for ITP.
Is TOEFL score negotiable if the overall profile is good enough?
( Ref: http://www.colorado.edu/prospective/graduate/academics/telecomm.html )
Hello Rushil. Thanks for your interest. You may apply with your score. Essentially, admission to our program is completed by a committee comprised of faculty members who measure a number of criteria concurrently with the TOEFL score. This score is just one component that contributes to your application package. Our program offers a number of courses that will stress oral and written proficiency in English. Most technical courses require written submissions and presentations. The net results of these writing and speaking exercises are a rapid improvement in written English and a greater comfort with public speaking.
Hello!
I've just received an admit to the ITP program, and am a few queries away to accepting admission.
Firstly, it would be of great help if one could contrast and compare ITP with UMD's ENTS and UPenn's TCOM with respect to technical job prospects (some job profile descriptions, packages, etc...would be of great help). It is a tad unfair of me to ask about other universities, so the above specific information, if limited to ITP alone, would be welcome too!
Every post suggests a hint of reluctance to provide numbers. I hope the reply to this one breaks the jinx.
Secondly,
Akki-- Your question is very complex. You should consider a number of things regarding any type of job or salary survey. Where will you be working? In what field will you be working? What skills will you focus on during your tenure in the ITP program? For example, a security specialist who decides to focus on employment in Washington DC may make more initially than someone who focusses on policy who has a more long term career in mind. It is just too difficult to give out specific salary statistics without knowing a number of these variables. Personally, I am in routing and switching and have already had several interviews and a few offers from potential employers. I am indeed much more qualified now for higher paying jobs at the end of this program than I was at the beginning.
Hi,
I have done my B.Tech in Electronics & Communication and have a work-ex of close to 2 yrs in a leading IT solution MNC in India.
I`m very much interested in the ITP program..
But my doubt is like i`ve also got an admit from Rutgers in MS in ECE.
Though ITP appears closer to what i`m looking to do but i cudn`t justify it with the ranking of UC Boulder which is quite lower as compared to Rutgers.
Can please someone enlighten me regarding the no. of job opportunities that one might be getting after ITP???
What are the reasons that I should join this program than a better ranked univ.? Please help by providing some insightful knowledge...
I mean there might not be a direct answer possible to this bt still an answer which could help make a decision as I dnt knw anything abt the job scenario in US & dnt want to land up in a place where I might have to struggle in finding a job even after MS...
2. The avg. starting packages for ppl with CS jobs as i got to knw arnd 60k, similarly can u please give a particular figure that a person can expect minimum, after MS in ITP
