Welcome to ITP's prospective student blog!

We understand you have a lot of questions as you decide which graduate program is right for you. ITP staff, faculty and current students will provide you the answers you need. Please post questions as comments under the topical headings. We have also created two sites on our webpage designed to answer many questions (FAQ and Fast Facts). If you have a question unrelated to the given topics, please post it to the "Other" category and we will file it under the correct heading. Please allow a few days for your questions to be answered.

Thanks for all of your recent questions about ITP. Please keep them coming.

By now, you are probably familiar with the University of Colorado’s Interdisciplinary Telecommunications Program and have been exposed to a lot of material about the department. The purpose of the prospective student blog (located at http://colorado-itp.blogspot.com/) is to provide insight into the culture, the courses, the students, and the community by bringing to the fore issues, questions, and comments about our program.

Many of my friends in the program have different reasons for choosing ITP at CU. Some come from the military and need training specific to their assignment, others are fresh out of competitive undergraduate programs, and some have been working in the industry for a while and are here to refresh skills or change the direction of their careers. Personally, I fall into the latter category and chose ITP because of the faculty and the resources. I wanted to work in a laboratory environment, have access to a variety of equipment, and attend classes taught by faculty who had experience in the telecommunications industry. I also wanted a program that would help me not only increase my technical proficiency, but also build global, national, and regional relationships within the telecommunications field.

My advice to an incoming or prospective student would be to use this blog to help you understand the people, the culture, and opportunities available to you in ITP. Ask questions and start thinking about how your decisions and course selections will map against your personal goals. Ideally, using this blog will help you learn as much as you can about the opportunities provided by the University of Colorado’s ITP program including the seminars, the self-improvement focused lectures, and the community. We hope this tool helps you get the most out of your education here in ITP and assists in building your familiarity with a variety of characteristics of our program. Also, take some time to look into the many activities that characterize the Boulder community. We have some of the best hiking, trail running, and of course skiing in the United States and we are the cycling capital of America. Please feel free to ask me any questions about the social and cultural opportunities in and around Boulder and Denver.

I'm a broadcasting engineer working for the largest broadcasting company in Korea, KBS.
Now I'm seeking for NON-DGREE study course for 1 YEAR.
I tried to find any courses for me but didn't succeed.
I'm interested in the field of electrical engineering, especially MPEG, IPTV, Multichannel broadcasting and related policy. (That's why I want this
telecommunication program)

Can you tell me you have any courses suitable for me? If possible, Please recommend me suitable course. or Can I
just receive some of lectures on non-degree basis?

I can start my study this fall or winter

My previous works were
1) MPEG2 Hardware encoder based on FPGA(VHDL),
2) ATSC 8VSB modulator/transmitter/re-transmitter based on FPGA
3) 6MHz~8MHz BW RF Recoding system based on FPGA PCI Card and PC
4) T-DMB Professional STB,
5) Now, hybrid TV for on-air free TV in Korea ...etc.

Thank you very much for reading. Please reply in ASAP.

Derek,
Based on your note, the best course for you to consider is TLEN 5380: The Future of Video. This is a newly designed course and will be taught this fall by experts in the field: Dale Hatfield; Preston Padden; and Dick Green. For greater details see the course posting, http://cuengineeringonline.colorado.edu/coursedb/view-course/126 .

You may enroll as a non-degree seeking student in the fall.

Understanding that this is a MS Program with a technical foundation, what is the feeling on the business and policy aspects of the degree?

Do they provide more of a well-rounded technical education? Or do you feel that the program is balanced enough to land positions related to engineering ones, but more policy/business in scope?

Shaun,
From the inception of the Program, ITP has incorporated into the curriculum both business and policy study. But your question is related to the employment market of today. In my communications with industry and hiring managers, all are seeking to hire people possessing skills beyond the technical scope. Organizations are leaner and employees are communicating with multiple cohorts, thus a need to have employees understand broad aspects impacting the organization. Graduates who possess or gain business acumen, communicate well verbally and in written format, and understand the technical foundation have been able to translate their skills to non-technical employment. Every year we have graduates who are hired as consultants with companies such as, Deloitte, Perficient, Goldman Sachs, etc.
